Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint
Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint
All natural, non toxic beautiful paint & stain
5 ingredients. that’s all.nothing else.
One quart of Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint covers approximately 70 sq. feet. Simply mix this powder with water- it’s that easy! A Milk Paint finish is unique and can range from a solid color to a stain, it all depends on how much water you add! It can be used on any porous surface without a primer. It will never chip or peel on porous surfaces as it soaks in and binds with the substrate. Have you ever come across a piece of trim or furniture or doors that you just can’t strip? Probably Milk Paint!
I think there are a few key things to understand in order to have success with Milk Paint, the main ones being how it works and how to mix it. Once you’ve got those two things down, you’re good to go! As always, if you have any questions at all, feel free to contact me- I’m happy to help!
Mixing: Mix approximately 1 part water to 1 part milk paint powder with a blender (that is strictly used for paint), by shaking in a rounded bottom container with a lid ( mason jars are perfect for this), by hand with a whisk or stir stick or with a motorized paint mixer. Everyone has their own preference, you will find yours :) Add tepid water (I try to use distilled water when I remember) to container, then add milk paint powder slowly and mix for 3-5 minutes. You’re not making scrambled eggs, you don’t want to mix air into the paint or it will get all frothy and thats no fun. Just stir. or blend… whatever. Mainly you want to break down any clumps and allow the powder to melt with the water. Remember- there are only 5 ingredients in our Milk Paint (casein, limestone, clay, chalk and pigments. thats it) but those 5 ingredients are strong! They need to dissolve and bind with the water, all of it, so scrape the sides of the container and stir stir stir. Then walk away. For real. Once its nice and smooth, set it down and walk away.
As it sits, it will thicken quite a bit, but still won’t be like traditional paints…. think half and half or low fat buttermilk (that’s a thing?). Let it sit for at least 10-15 minutes. This is a great time to prep your piece or drink a coke or whatever you need to do, just let it sit for as long as you can stand it ;) .When you’re ready to paint, give it another quick stir to mix it all up again and get to it! You’ll notice the paint is much thicker now than before, so add more water now if you need to and stir again. It’s always a good idea to paint a test swatch! Apply paint evenly in long, smooth strokes with a brush, roller or sprayer- yes, you can shoot milk paint with a paint sprayer! Be sure you stir well and often, use a strainer and thin it a little bit more. Stir paint occasionally as pigments may settle at the bottom of the container. Drying time is approximately 30 minutes, depending on the humidity. You will for sure be able to tell when it’s dry (see photos below)
Depending on the coverage desired, it usually takes 2-3 coats to cover, maybe more when using a light color over a darker color. If chipping is happening, its usually on the 2nd coat that you’ll be able to see it happen. When you’re finished and its dry, lightly sand with a 220 grit sandpaper to smooth surface or whatever grit you need to use for the look you want.wipe it down to remove dust.
Now, you may be wondering what the fuss is all about at this point. But wait…. the magic that is milk paint is about to happen in a minute. Top coat time!! Because milk paint is so porous, it needs a topcoat to seal it. This is when the magic happens! The depth and richness of the color is so beautiful and totally unique to Milk Paint! I use and highly recommend MMS Hemp Oil for a 100% natural finish or MMS Furniture Wax for a hand-rubbed appearance. A polyurethane or varnish of your choosing may also be applied- any top coat will work.
The following images were taken by Marian Parsons, aka Miss Mustard Seed. She used the color Artissimo and hemp oil…. this takes you through from start to finish!
